Maryam Nawaz is a Pakistani politician and social worker who is widely known as a daughter of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. She is the vice president of the Pakistani center-right conservative party Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz. She was appointed as the Chairperson of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme but she resigned from the post when her appointment was challenged in Lahore High Court in 2014.

Maryam Nawaz Early Life & Education:

Maryam Nawaz was born on October 28, 1973, in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan to Nawaz Sharif and Kalsoom Nawaz. Her father Nawaz Sharif served for three non-consecutive terms as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. She has a sister named Asma and two brothers named Hassan and Hussain.

Maryam Nawaz studied at Convent of Jesus and Mary, Lahore. She dreamt of to be a doctor in early life and admitted to King Edward Medical College. Maryam had to leave the college without completing a degree in allegation of illegal admission.

Then she received an undergraduate degree and masters from the University of Punjab in English Literature. She claims that she received a Ph.D. degree in 2012 but her Ph.D. degree was questioned by Lahore High Court. Maryam only declared her master’s degree in English Literature during submitting records to the Election Commission of Pakistan in 2018.

Maryam Nawaz Political Career:

In 2011, Maryam Nawaz got permission for doing politics from her father following express her positive intention about politics. Primarily, she started visiting educational institutes to give speeches on women’s rights and education after debuting in politics. She played an important role during the 2013 Pakistani general election for her father.

Maryam was featured on The New York Times list of 11 Powerful Women Around the World for the year 2017. She was also listed in the BBC’s 100 Women. She participated in the 2018 general election from Constituency NA-127 (Lahore-V) and PP-173.

On August 8, 2019, she was arrested while going to meet her father in jail.

Personal Life:

Maryam Nawaz married Muhammad Safdar Awan, a Pakistani politician and retired Army Officer who is more than 10 years older to her born in 1963. She married at 19 years old in 1992 with the consent of the family. Together the couple has three children a son-Junaid and two daughters-Mahnoor and Mehr-un-Nisa.
