Esther Duflo was born on October 25, 1972, in Paris, France to Michel Duflo and Violaine Duflo. Her father is a mathematics professor where the mother is a paediatrician. During her childhood, mother Violaine Duflo participated in medical humanitarian projects.
Violaine completed her bachelor’s degree in history and economics from École Normale Supérieure in 1994. Then she earned a master’s degree from the Paris Schools of Economics. Subsequently, Violaine completed a Ph.D. in economics at MIT in 1999, under the joint supervision of Abhijit Banerjee and Joshua Angrist.
Esther Duflo Career:
Esther Duflo was appointed an assistant professor at MIT in 2002 after her completing a Ph.D. as the youngest faculty member at 29 years old. She co-founded Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) at MIT in 2003.
