Kailasavadivoo Sivan

Kailasavadivoo Sivan is a popular and well-known Indian space scientist and current chairperson of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). He draws huge media attention when India fails to reach lunar space on September 8, 2019, only 2.1 kilometers away from the soil of the moon.

Sivan broke down after Vikram contact lost to the ground station and Prime Minister Modi consoles him over the matter.  He is known as the Indian Rocket Man for designing cryogenic engines.

Kailasavadivoo Sivan Early Life:

Born in Mela Sarakkalvilai, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu state of India, Kailasavadivoo Sivan was welcomed to mother earth on April 14, 1957. His father Kailasavadivoo is a farmer and mother Chellam is a housewife.

Being a son of farmer father he is the first graduate in his family. He studied at Government school in Mela Sarakkalvilai Village. Later he received a bachelor degree in engineering from Madras Institute of Technology in 1980.

Two years later in 1982, he achieved a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Then Sivan earned a doctoral degree in the same subject from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.  Now he is Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and working in ISRO since 1982.

Kailasavadivoo Sivan Career:

Kailasavadivoo Sivan was appointed in the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for developing of launch vehicles in 1982. He worked on the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) Project. On July 2, 2014, he was chosen as the Director of ISRO’s Liquid Propulsion Systems Center.

Following a year he became the director of VSSC. Finally, he was appointed as the chief of ISRO in January 2018. Sivan is widely notable for the development of cryogenic engines, for India’s space program. On July 22, 2019, ISRO launched Chandrayaan 2, as their part of the second mission to moon under the guidance of Sivan.

Personal Life:

Kailasavadivoo Sivan married Malathi Sivan. Together the couple has two children named Siddharth and Sushanth. He published a book named Integrated Design for Space Transportation System.

  • Dr. Biren Roy Space Science award (2011)
  • He was conferred Doctor of Science from Sathyabama University, Chennai in April 2014.
  • Tamil Nadu government’s Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award. (2019)
